Furrow Lights :: Propellor Design

I'm totally digging these bamboo pendant lights from Canadian design firm Propellor Design.  I love the way the light peeks out from the intersecting grooves!

About:
Our Furrow series of pendant lights was born out of experiments in the wood-shop with one of our favorite Eco-friendly materials, laminated bamboo. We created a pattern of perforations that allow light to escape the shade, bringing its surfaces to life with a warm ambient glow.

Also available as a single, narrow pendant.

Furrow Lights by Propellor Design: $295 - $460

Puff pendants and Knoop Rope coffee tables, oh my!  Josh Urso Design explores the application of "resin impregnated" materials in these two unique collections.  The Knoop Rope tables are made from lengths of rope (400 - 700 feet, depending on style), which have been imbued with resin and formed into cubes.  The Puff Pendants go through a similar process, turning soft, mesh fabric into deceivingly hard folds that diffuse a nice, warm light.  An interesting method, to say the least!

Check out the whole collection here.

Would you believe me if I told you there isn't a single screw in this entire shelving unit?  It's true.  The whole thing is held together with cables and zipties.  Now that's innovation, folks.  It can even be used as a coffee table, should you find a slab of glass that's suitable.

About:

T.SHELF is an abbreviation for Triangle shelf. It is a unique shelving system that can be setup around your existing furniture, or can be just hanging by itself on a wall as a sculptural object.  The concept was to create furniture for modern nomadic culture. It is easy to setup and pack flat for space saving transportation.

The first approach was to get rid of screws. This also gets rid of the tools in assembling the furniture.  T.SHELF uses cable and zip ties to tie every triangle into one piece of furniture/sculpture and functions as displaying books, magazines, plants, pictures, or anything you want to display.

I included this glossy feeder in my CB2 Outdoor Collection round up over on Grassroots Modern last week, but I love it too much not to include it here.  Made of steel with a high gloss, epoxy coating in a bright, happy orange.  I love the retro shape and open design!  Unfortunately, we don't have enough trees to support my budding bird feeder obsession.  Maybe one day.

You probably saw this on Design Milk yesterday, but it was just too amazing not to re-post.  As a fan of rugs, bright colors, and fish, this rug is the absolute motherload.  If I died tomorrow, at least I died knowing that this little nugget of perfection exists.

About:
Portuguese manufacturer Piodao Group is unveiling their newest line of hand-tufted rugs at this year's Milan Design Week under the name Tufted.  The Pixel Rug is just one in an exciting new collection.

I'm really drawn to Raquel's work; something about the beautiful color palettes and the slightly bizarre depictions really gets me.  My favorite is definitely the skeleton; he looks like he's up to something!

About:
Raquel was born in Avila, Romania with her twin sister Sae. After spending a few years in Edinburgh, Scotland she moved to Spain to study illustration and then to Florida where she attended the Illustration Academy. In 2006 she started illustrating professionally for magazines, books and advertising and has worked with distinguished clients such as The New York Times, Elle, Nokia and Orange. She has taught collage illustration workshops at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and her work has been honored by Society of Illustrators NY.

The California Desk

OK, this desk is just out of control.  Made from salvaged Claro Walnut with a salvaged Maple base, and finished with hand-rubbed, low-toxic Tung Oil.  Who knew California would make such a great looking desk?

About:
The form offers incredible ergonomic function as a desk, and brings to mind all of the positive associations with "the golden state": artistic contribution, technical innovation, entertainment production, political progression, and diversity of population and geographies.

The Claro Walnut, a perfect analog to the left coast's culture and people, possesses a spectrum of colors and textures, unlike many other wood species. And, because Claro Walnut is not harvested commercially at any significant scale, it is obtained mostly through small, independent sawyers who are able to spare displaced trees from the landfill or chipper.

The California Desk is the beautiful brainchild of furniture designer Jared Rusten.  Check out more of his work on the J.Rusten Furniture Studio site or on his Flickr page.

LostRiverModern

I put out a request for some low-key vacation ideas, and blogger friend Tim aka FourSpace sent me this gem.  LostRiverModern is a modern prefab cabin located in scenic Lost River, West Virginia.  Available for rent at $200 - $250 a night, this would be a perfect place to go relax with some friends.

The cabin is the first, and only, home available for guests from the award winning design firm Resolution: 4.  This 64' x 16' prefab beauty sits atop a walk-out basement, boasts 2 floors with a master bed/bath on one and a second bed/bath on the other.  Each floor also has a living space and/or media center.

I think they did a really great job decorating, as well.  Between the Le Corbusier chairs, LCW, and Shell chairs, I'd have a hard time resisting the urge to just sit all day.

I think I'm sold.  Who wants to take a trip to Lost River with me?  I call dibs on the master bedroom, though.

See more here.

I'm still using a coin purse I got in Chinatown about 6 years ago, even though it's frayed and has a broken zipper.  I think it's time for a replacement and these coin purses from Marimekko are looking mighty fine.  So far, I've only seen them available through TwentyTwentyOne.  I'm hoping someone starts carrying them here in the States soon.  Otherwise, I'll feel compelled to pay exorbitant shipping fees just to get my hands on one.

Kimberley Gundle :: Modern Rugs

These rugs just blew my mind, so pardon the mess.

About:
Kimberley, born in vibrant South Africa, graduated from The Michaelis school of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. She continued her studies in Fine art and completed her Post Graduate at The Slade School of Fine Art in London, where she has been living and working as an artist since 1988.

All Kimberley's rugs are made to order; Kimberley will come up with a design to suit your home and lifestyle. Her rugs are made from 100% wool or a wool and silk mix. All colours are hand dyed to the specific colour requirement. Each rug is hand-knotted at a quality of 100 knots or more per square inch depending on design.

Truly works of art. I'd have a hard time actually using them as rugs, unless I somehow managed to rig them to shock anyone who stepped on them.

Gallotti & Radice :: Air Series

I've got a bit of thing for glass tables; our dining table is glass, my office desk is glass, the side table in our living room is glass... you get the idea.  I just love the look of transparent objects in the home, especially in a smaller home like ours.  That's why I nearly blew a gasket when I saw this series of glass desks from Italian company Gallotti & Radice.

The Air Series consists of a table and a desk, though there are many other glass objects from this company.  Made from 12mm thick tempered glass, they're also available with a painted glass top, and anodized aluminum, stainless steel, or embossed white or black lacquered metal parts.

How do you guys feel about glass furniture/accessories?  Love it?  Hate it?  Share your thoughts!
