Unflown Design | Jacob Covey

. 5.28.2009

Jacob Covey is an incredibly talented graphic designer. In fact, that's something of an understatement.

Jacob is an award-winning designer whose work has appeared in Print, Communication Arts, and HOW magazines, as well as in books on design and visual culture. He currently serves as Art Director at the pioneering comics and art publisher Fantagraphics Books (my favorite publisher of all time), where his work has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards for Best Publication Design.

In short, that means he's the bees knees of design.

Be sure to stop by his website, Unflown Design, to see more of his work. In the meantime, here are a couple books he's designed that I can't wait to get my greasy little fingers on:

Abstract Comics: The Anthology by Andrei Molotiu
The editor has culled together the first ever collection of non-narrative, abstract comics with artists ranging from the legendary R. Crumb and Gary Panter to never-before-published creators.

Immersing the reader fully in the experience of abstract comics, the introduction itself has been presented in abstraction-- printed first in dingbats, then "translated" into Arabic letterforms in the lower half of the pages.
[Available for Pre-Order on Amazon - Release Date: June 29, 2009]

Town of Mirrors: The Reassembled Imagery of Robert Pollard
Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices) was named one of “The Top 50 Rock & Roll Front Men of All-Time” by Spin magazine. Town of Mirrors collects his collage art for the first time.

Jacob says:
This was a unique experience in that Pollard's philosophical approach to the art making process had me engaged in creating the layouts more collaboratively than is typical of art books. The text is not tied to a grid but responds to the layout of the images. Also, song lyrics appear throughout, sometimes as I typeset them in the computer, sometimes scanned from the artist's own handwriting, and at times manipulated on the photocopier with a fluxist unpredictability (such as the warped text).
[Available from Fantagraphics for $30]
